The Business Analytics Certificate builds analytical fluency through four applied, career-focused courses. You will study the foundational principles of data science across disciplines, develop quantitative decision-making skills through spreadsheet-based modeling and apply statistical inference, regression, time series analysis and hypothesis testing to solve complex business problems using Excel and specialized software. The coursework also covers linear programming, forecasting, decision analysis and project management, with hands-on experience in the R programming language, all skills directly transferable to careers in finance and operations. No prior experience is required.

Required Business Analytics Certificate Courses

An introductory course in data science/analytics that introduces the subject to a variety of students of all academic disciplines and backgrounds and without any prior knowledge of data science. It provides a general framework, background and principles, and programming tools required for using and understanding data science and its applications in various disciplines. All the above is implemented using the R programming language which will be an essential part of the course and will be used in all applications and assignments.
This course provides an applied introduction to management science (operations research) with an emphasis on quantitative decision-making for business problems. Students will learn to formulate, solve, and interpret optimization and analytical models using Microsoft Excel and the Solver add-in. Topics include linear programming, transportation and assignment models, decision analysis, forecasting, inventory models, and project management. The course emphasizes practical application, spreadsheet-based modeling, and managerial interpretation of results.
This course introduces R as a statistical computing environment for analyzing and visualizing data in business contexts, with applications drawn from finance, operations, marketing, and economics. Students examine fundamental concepts and techniques in R through structured, example-driven analyses of real-world business problems. Instruction emphasizes systematic, step-by-step approaches to data analysis, highlighting established analytical methods, reproducible workflows, and practical solutions commonly used to support data-informed decision-making in organizational and economic settings.

Topics include collection and presentation of data, discrete and continuous distributions, probability and sampling theory, statistical inference and hypothesis testing and their use in business management decisions. Parametric and nonparametric statistical tests will be examined, including t-tests, Chi-square and ANOVA. Additional topics include regression, time series analysis and applications in business forecasting. The solution of statistical problems will require the use of Excel and possibly other statistical software. Prerequisites: BA 131 and STAT 243.

Two of the four Business Analytics Certificate courses — Introduction to Management Science (BA 260) and Quantitative Business Analysis (BA 323) — require prior completion of CS 161 or BA 169Z, plus STAT 243Z, before enrolling. If you have already completed the EOU Data Analytics Certificate, you will have STAT 243Z in place and may only need the computer science or programming prerequisite. Students transferring equivalent coursework from another institution may be eligible to have prerequisites waived.
