Frequently Asked Questions

Pursuing online programs can lead to many questions. Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about online coursework with EOU.

Besides the convenience of studying from a time and place that work best for you, employers value skills that you develop from an online education: the initiative to complete tasks, the ability to work independently, digital composing skills, time management skills and organizational skills.

The biggest difference is that sometimes you will complete work in an asynchronous environment (classes and events happen on a delay) and sometimes you will work in a synchronous environment (classes and events happen immediately). In the asynchronous environment, instead of showing up to a classroom at a designated time and day, you will frequently check Canvas or other online platforms for materials shared by your professor. You can ask questions via Canvas or email; and similarly, you will submit work online and await grading online instead of receiving graded work in the classroom.

In a synchronous environment, you will have a scheduled, digital class meeting with live or immediate interactions. Be sure to take note of the type of online environment your individual professors will use, and adhere to all assignment deadlines.

Yes. Many professors will offer digital conference times using technologies such as live chat, video calls or phone calls. Check with your professors about how to schedule individual meetings.

Your enrollment counselor is available for questions about applying to EOU Online and registering for your courses. Talk with your academic advisor to stay on track with your degree progress. A transcript team will ensure that you get the most credit possible for past college credit, and a tuition planner will assist you in completing financial aid paperwork and assessing the cost of your education. Also, do not forget that you have access to EOU campus resources such as student services, admissions, disability services, financial aid and student advocacy.

An online education is more affordable than attending classes in-person; At EOU, the cost per credit hour for most online undergraduate courses is $252, while the cost per credit hour for on-campus, in-person courses is $448 for out-of-state residents. A cost differential will be applied to ACCT, BA and ECON prefix courses.
