Dr. John Lundy, an assistant professor at Eastern Oregon University, highlights the importance of a bachelor’s degree in today’s evolving economic landscape. He especially emphasizes the significance of study in his specific field, Interdisciplinary Studies.
With the flexibility to combine two minors or create an individualized plan, students in the Interdisciplinary Studies program can tailor their education to their specific interests and career goals.
“Our curriculum is designed to equip students with critical-thinking, communication and research skills,” Dr. Lundy said. “This expertise is vital in the changing job market.”
Interdisciplinary approaches help students address complex everyday problems, due to the various insights from fields such as medicine, sociology and economics. By engaging in individualized projects and one culminating portfolio project, students similarly learn to apply interdisciplinary methods to real-world questions.
Dr. Lundy provides support to students as both a teacher and a mentor. “The Interdisciplinary Studies department is accessible,” he said, “so each student receives individual and personalized attention.”
EOU’s fully online learning experience also highlights the importance of fostering connection. Class sizes are intentionally small to help promote meaningful connections through engaging class activities, including discussion forums and peer review.
“Former students have gone on to pursue advanced degrees in fields like education and philosophy,” Dr. Lundy said of students graduating from the EOU Interdisciplinary Studies program. “They’ve also launched successful careers in diverse fields such as social work and portrait photography.”
By fostering adaptability and a broad skillset, the Interdisciplinary Studies program prepares students for a wide range of career paths.
“The Interdisciplinary Studies program is a long-term investment. It provides students with the tools to navigate multiple career changes and opportunities throughout their lives,” Dr. Lundy said.
