| Academic Requirements: | – A minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA is required in all courses counting toward the degree – 60 graded credit hours in English/Writing at the 500-level or above – At least 4 credit hours in WR 552 (writing workshop) must be in a genre other than your principal genre – WR 550 Residency: Generative Workshop (Fishtrap workshop) is graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory – Post-Residency WR 552 Individualized Studies: Projects in Writing is devoted to polishing work begun during the Summer Residency. – One credit hour of WR 609 (practicum) is required during the program – Students wishing to pursue a third-year in another genre should expect to repeat their second-year curriculum and submit a second thesis in that other genre |
| Admission Requirements: | The Master of Fine Arts degree requires two types of admission: 1. Admission to Eastern Oregon University with “Graduate Student” status. 2. Admission to the MFA program. Both applications should be submitted at the same time. Here’s how to apply: – Create an account in the EOU Online system using your name and email address – Apply for admission by filling out the online application – Pay your $50 non-refundable application fee online – Transcripts: Provide official transcripts from all accredited educational institutions attended |
| Additional Requirements: | – A Personal statement – Writing sample: 15-20 pages of double-spaced prose, 10-15 pages of poetry (one poem per page), or a combination of no more than 20 pages for writers who intend to work in both prose and poetry – Two letters of recommendation |

*Graduate program applications may require additional fees.
Transfer Credit
The online MFA program accepts a maximum of 15 transfer graduate credit hours for qualifying courses.
Enrollment Level
The standard enrollment level in the MFA program is three-quarters time or 7-8 credits, and 5 credit hours are required to be eligible for financial aid. Students who plan to attend half time should contact the financial aid office before the beginning of their term to have their aid revised.

Our MFA curriculum begins each Summer, and the next start is Summer 2026.
